Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Aven from Regina, SK.

Aven’s life in Regina, SK., took a drastic turn at 10 years old when what seemed like growing pains turned out to be leukemia. His journey at Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) was tough, but the uplifting atmosphere and supportive staff helped him through. Engaging in activities like the Mosaic Child Life Program and visiting the JPCH Movie Theatre brought him joy during his treatment.

“Everyone was so caring and made our time there a little easier as it was a very emotional time for us,” said Rory, Aven’s dad.   

Despite facing challenges like weight loss and food aversion, Aven completed his two-and-a-half-year treatment in August 2023. Now 13, he enjoys playing guitar, building Lego, gaming, and spending time with friends. Aven’s family is grateful for his resilience and for the care at JPCH that helped him find moments of happiness throughout his medical journey.

Your 50/50 Purchase Helps Saskatchewan Kids Like Kenji

In November 2022, Kenji from Kindersley, SK., experienced ear pain assumed to be an infection. However, Kenji’s symptoms worsened in the months that followed, including extreme ear pain and swelling in his eye which led to his admission to Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), where he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). 
  
“Every step of the way, the medical team demonstrated an outstanding level of expertise and proficiency. They displayed not only their medical knowledge but also their incredible ability to provide emotional support to both my son and our entire blended family. During those challenging months, I knew Kenji was in the most capable hands,” Carmela said, Kenji’s mom. 

Kenji underwent 194 days of chemotherapy at JPCH. Now as an eight-year-old, Kenji’s resilience inspires all who know him. He enjoys making friends, learning, drawing, and playing soccer and basketball, cherishing time with family.

Cassidy, a resilient young girl from Saskatoon, SK, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at the age of four, a rare genetic disease affecting one in 2,500 individuals. Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Cassidy and her family have found unwavering support at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH), where she receives comprehensive care every three months at the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. 

“I’m so grateful for my team at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital for the way they take care of me. I get to continue living my life and thrive because of the way I’m being taken care of,” said Cassidy. 

Cassidy has not only persevered but also become an advocate for CF awareness and research. Alongside her mother, Kimberly, she founded Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand, raising an impressive $125,000 for CF research over 11 years. Now at 16, Cassidy is eagerly embracing new milestones like getting her driver’s license, while also enjoying her passions for singing, spending time with friends, and pursuing a summer job as a certified lifeguard.

At just four months old, Jack from Swift Current, SK started showing signs of health issues, including coughing and choking while breastfeeding and sleeping. Lindsay, his mother, sought help, leading to a diagnosis of a Laryngeal Cleft at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) when Jack was nearly two.

Following treatment, including surgery and ongoing care at JPCH, Jack, now five, has fully recovered, enjoying a healthy and active life, including his newfound love for hockey.

The dedicated medical team at JPCH played a crucial role in Jack’s journey to recovery, providing exceptional care and support throughout his treatment process.

“Nobody wants to have to take their child to the hospital but it makes such a difference knowing that there’s a place so close to home in Saskatchewan. Our appointments were always on time, the staff and volunteers were always warm, understanding and kind, and they always helped to keep us at ease,” said Jack’s mom, Lindsay.

Eight-month-old Layna has spent the majority of her life within the walls of Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH). Her mother, Sydney, noticed differences during this pregnancy compared to her previous ones, prompting regular appointments at JPCH from Île-à-la-Crosse, in anticipation of Layna’s birth. Despite concerns raised by scans, Layna’s arrival caught everyone off guard when she wasn’t breathing, leading to immediate CPR from the medical team.

The following months were filled with uncertainty as Layna battled through numerous health challenges, including a diagnosis of a PBX-1 genetic mutation affecting her kidneys, lungs, and heart, leading to multiple surgeries and procedures. Despite the hardships, Sydney describes Layna as a spirited and cheerful baby who faces adversity with resilience. The specialized care at JPCH has been invaluable to Layna’s recovery. Although there is uncertainty about her future, Sydney holds onto hope for Layna’s eventual reunion with her father and siblings, eagerly awaiting their return home together. Click here to learn more about Layna’s story.
